Ready to Grow Up and Lead?

A seismic shift happens when someone enters a leadership role. Some are oblivious to it while others instinctively understand what to do when this shift happens. When you take on a leadership role, even when you didn’t ask for it, it is time to grow up and stop being a little boy or a little princess. In other words it is no longer about you it is about them.

The most effective leaders are hyper-focused on the needs of others: clients, employees, direct reports, multiple stakeholders. The leader’s needs are satisfied only after the needs of those that follow them are. When a leader is self-focused they aren’t building anything or anyone up. They are not someone that people will want to follow into that great unknown opportunity. When a leader can’t get people to follow them they become ineffective in their role and will encounter many difficulties.

When you are ready to grow up and lead you put aside your individual talents and success. When you finally grow up it becomes about teaching and coaching, motivating, supporting, removing roadblocks and demanding the resources needed for your employees. You start celebrating their victories and rewarding them. Their success is YOUR success and their failure is YOUR failure.

Avoid the common misunderstanding that leadership is about your performance. Leadership is about your ability to transform an organization, department, culture or team through others. This requires your influence and ability to motivate people to follow you. Your performance is solely based on the transformation you accomplish in your team.

One person cannot accomplish much. Transforming others is your job now and really always was. Today is the day you have to grow up and start taking your people who are already great and making them unbelievable.
