The One Thing a Great Boss Never Says

Being a great boss isn’t easy. The designation of a great boss is entirely dependent on an individual’s feelings which can change based on how they feel any given situation ends. Bosses will say more than their fair share of stupid or demotivating things to their staff but the great ones always double back quickly to apologize.

The one thing a great boss never says is “you have no authority.” It doesn’t matter if the employee is leading a project, serving on a cross-functional team or just doing the job they were hired to do, a great boss knows employees need a certain level of authority to reach their full potential. When a boss says “you have no authority” there is a problem.

Without authority employees are unable to serve the customer, move a project forward or accomplish their tasks. At the very least, when a boss removes an employee’s authority, it will severely slow down their ability to complete the project or task because they will have to keep stopping to ask for permission.

Employees are hired because of their accomplishments, knowledge or skills. When the boss removes an employee’s ability to call upon their judgment to do what is in the best interest of all involved the employee has two options.

  1. Find out how the trust was broken and repair it
  2. Find a new boss

Great bosses encourage their employees and are genuinely interested in their growth. They readily give them their trust and guide them along the way so that the trust isn’t broken. Great bosses know that in order for an employee to be the superstar they hired them to be that they have to give them the authority to rise up to the task.

Be a great boss by giving your employees the authority that is needed to do their job, to grow and succeed.
