Tuesday Tip – Why You Need Corporate Politics

Simply put you cannot lead if you cannot maneuver corporate politics. Why do you ask? Or perhaps you are thinking “that’s not true”. Let me explain why corporate politics are important to your leadership ability.

You may be able to sell an idea to a group of people and get them to rally behind you. But without the ability to maneuver through corporate politics you will not be able to garner the support needed to bring the vision to life.

Taking advantage of corporate politics helps your vision withstand the naysayers, who may have the authority to shut it down and then recruit them. Once they are on your side they will help you make that vision a reality.

Knowing how to work within corporate politics gives you the ability to:

  • Have clarity around the things you can and can’t control
  • Know the right time to pitch your vision or idea for something better
  • Easily identify the key players who will want to stop your vision from becoming a reality
  • Easily identify the key players you need to recruit to sell your idea and move it forward

We all operate within corporate politics to some level. Get your head out of the sand and start using it to your advantage. Pretending that you don’t play corporate politics will only serve to hold you back and either slow or kill your vision altogether.
