The saying “it’s a small world” is especially true in business. In business, you never know who will be your boss, your client, or your peer. For that reason, don’t make these common mistakes when quitting your job.
1. Not giving adequate notice is a mistake when quitting your job.
In the U.S. a two-week notice is standard. Don’t make the mistake of leaving without notice, or worse, ghosting your employer.
2. Telling everyone before telling the boss.
It is tempting to tell work-friends that you are going to quit, but doing so before the boss is a common mistake. No matter how well-intentioned people are, slips happen. Consequently, you are the best person to tell the story as to why you are leaving.
3. Having loose lips and spilling everything negative that’s been on your mind.
It may feel like all the pent up anger and frustration can be released now that the resignation is in, but you have to keep it longer. Like forever. Even after quitting your job, never talk negatively about the company or people. Having loose lips is one of the biggest mistakes people make when quitting their job.
4. Stealing intellectual property, documents, or other company property.
The reward isn’t worth the risk. Some companies monitor data transfers once someone resigns. Getting caught could cause the new employer to rescind their offer. Theft also causes ineligibility for rehire and removes any chance of a reference. Stealing ideas, training or clients is a mistake to avoid when quitting your job.
5. Not saying goodbye.
Not saying goodbye and sharing contact information will make crossing paths with former co-workers awkward. Avoid this common mistake when quitting your job by giving people the closure they deserve.
Don’t tarnish your new adventure by creating drama when leaving a job. Maintain your reputation, references, and network by exiting as gracefully as your entrance.
