The Top 3 Ways You Are Sabotaging Your Career

It’s so easy to sabotage your own career that you can do it without even trying. One bad joke, an inappropriately timed comment or declaring war on a senior leader. These things can label you as untrustworthy, unstable or someone with poor judgment. However, these things can happen when you are caught up in the moment and get carried away. Don’t sabotage your career with these 3 foolish things you can easily control.

Being Tardy for the Party

Things will happen in life that causes you to be late. So why be late when it is avoidable? If you arrive on time when you can then when those life moments happen when it is unavoidable it won’t be such a setback. Due to a poor attendance record, you will be labeled as unreliable, untrustworthy, undependable or worse. Having poor attendance will sabotage your career.

Mismanaging Your Reputation

Your reputation comes in many forms. How you are known in the organization based on the work you produce. What other people in the organization say about you when you aren’t around. Your online reputation. By not disputing what other people are saying about you, delivering the best work possible and being careful with your social media usage you are taking a passive approach to managing your reputation. Consequently, it will sabotage your career. As a result you will be labeled as unstable, unreliable, untrustworthy or worse.

Not Delivering on Your Objectives and Staying Quiet About It

The due date for a deliverable is approaching and you know you won’t meet it. You stay quiet and hope no one will hold you accountable. Or, you start rehearsing excuses and finding someone else to blame. Speak up and ask for help before the final countdown. Denial around delivering your objectives, therefore, will sabotage your career and label you unreliable and someone with poor judgment.

Missteps will happen that can sabotage your career. Speaking out of turn, being too vocal about the leadership or direction the organization is moving or losing your temper out of frustration and also losing control of your emotions. Therefore, don’t sabotage your career over these simple things that are easily within your control.
