I’m not big on oldies but somehow the song The Wanderer by Dion popped into my head, in particular the chorus:
They call me the wanderer
Yeah, the wanderer
I roam around, around, around
As we wrap up the first week of January there are many resolutions being fulfilled and some that have already been procrastinated. One excellent habit for any leader to develop is to become a wanderer. Walk the halls, go to the coffee/water station, make copies or pick things up from the printer. All of these things give you a simple presence among the staff on the floor. Stop by the office celebrations or attend a team meeting you were invited to. Find ways to “be there”.
Be there, where your employees are, where the action is even if it’s just a series drive by’s. Your team will notice your effort and you will learn a thing or two about what is really happening and how it is going.
Roam around, around, around and become known as the wanderer. Start seeing, hearing and understanding all that is happening under your leadership.
