New hires can bring mixed emotions. Will they hit the ground running or will they take time to find their groove? Do I have the time necessary to spend with them to help them be great? How long before they start producing? I can’t afford them to make any mistakes. Will they bond with the team or will their be conflict?
New hires are typically strong performers. They are just out of training and your processes and procedures are top of mind. They have not yet formed the bad habits you painstakingly try to correct.
Here are a few less than obvious reasons you need new hires. Appreciate these things. Embrace the new people on your team and all the potential they bring to the table.
Energized – New hires are energized and ready to dive in. Maybe they have been out of work for a period of time. Perhaps they are making a transition into a new career field. Whatever the reason they bring a new level of energy. Soak it in and allow it to recharge you.
Eager to gain credibility – New hires are eager to prove they are worthy and gain credibility. They will take on tasks readily and with a high level of alertness. They will strive to complete them early or on-time so they can ask for more.
Fresh thoughts and ideas – Their eyes are new and un-tainted. Their thoughts and perspectives are based on experiences outside of your organization. Listen to them with clear eyes and an open heart. Don’t dismiss their contributions because you feel they don’t know your organization yet. Tap into this new idea garden and harvest it.
They don’t know what they don’t know – They don’t know the politics or the unofficial hierarchy. They aren’t stuck on the limitations of your processes, systems or your people. This ignorance gives them a boldness that should be valued and respected, not met with rolling eyes, signs and snide comments.
Learn to appreciate your new hires for these less than obvious reasons. Welcome them to the team, make a big deal that they have come on board. Start viewing their contributions with an open mind. Keep your biases in check when they come with ideas or suggestions. Stop viewing them as a threat and instead see them for the new secret weapon to help you win the war on your competition.
