Once in a lifetime talent can take your business to the next level. You have to be able to recognize these individuals in order to truly capitalize on their contributions. We all desire a workplace where everyone is equal but they aren’t because they are at very different stages in their career and their development.
Once in a lifetime talent are those employees who are innately talented and possess leadership abilities. They are ambitious and strive to achieve results and advancement. More than that they are engaged and focused on the continuous improvement of their personal and professional skills. They are also focused on the continuous improvement of the team and other co-workers.
If you don’t fully harness their talents, keep them engaged and feed their hunger for success they will either become disengaged or they will leave. No matter what option they choose you will lose in a big way. Here are a few simple and effective ways to keep them on your team:
Challenge them
Never let once in a lifetime talent become bored. Keep stretching them beyond their current capabilities by offering them key roles on new projects.
Give them your time
Time is your greatest asset. Once in a lifetime talent understands and appreciates the time you give them. Hold regular one-on-one’s that are consistent and have an agenda.
Show them the money/advancement
Now that you have challenged them and they successfully stepped up to that challenge, reward them with advancement, additional responsibilities and perhaps even more money.
When you come across once in a lifetime talent do everything within your power to keep them engaged and loyal to you and your organization, failure to do so could end up sending them to your competitor.
