Do Something Different – Encourage Others to Grow

Creating a motivational environment will increase morale, productivity and employee engagement. A leader’s primary role is to create an atmosphere that encourages others to grow and thrive.

  • Ask people their opinion rather than telling them yours. When faced with a challenge or new opportunity, open the floor and ask your employees for their opinion on how to tackle it. Resist the urge to provide your input until a majority of the people have spoken. This also helps avoid the “go with the flow” mentality.
  • When people ask you for answers or solutions, have them come up with several answers or options rather than giving them the answer. Discuss the merits of their views and how to make them successful. This encourages independent thought and strategic thinking.
  • Provide positive feedback when employees voice their opinions, offer suggestions or try to resolve challenges. Reinforcing behavior on your part will encourage more spontaneity, thinking and innovation on their part. It isn’t always easy for others to speak up in a group setting and when they do it takes an incredible amount of courage. Recognize and reward their effort to encourage them to do so again.
  • Ask questions, even when you don’t know the answer. Ask employees challenging questions that encourage them to think, plan and react. Above all, encourage employees to challenge themselves.
  • Encourage employees to take appropriate risks. Support them when they do and also when the outcome of risk-taking isn’t positive. In those cases, evaluate what went wrong and encourage other, more appropriate risks. Risk taking is what moves your group from average to extraordinary.

Change up your leadership by doing something different. Be bold, be brave and continue to find ways to help others grow and thrive. Your only measure of success is the success you help your followers find.
