It takes a mature and confident leader to say I’m OK being behind the scenes. Being behind the scenes allows other people to shine. The primary objective of a leader is to bring out the greatness in others. How can a leader bring out the full potential in others when they are shining too bright? How are they helping others when they are also concerned with their advancement and achievements?
When a leader is secure enough in who they are and comfortable enough with themselves, they can operate behind the scenes. It is only when a leader is working behind the scenes that they can play their role in helping others advance. Helping advance others is how leaders create a leadership bench. It is how they close the leadership gap. Isn’t a leader judged by the other leaders they have created?
When a leader is comfortable behind the scenes, their leadership is genuine. Behind the scenes is where they can help others truly advance; it is where they can transfer the skills that will help others improve. Behind the scenes is how leaders can go out of their way to help others advance.
When behind the scenes, leaders aren’t worried about others shining brighter than them; they no longer compete with others. They stop thinking, “I’ can’t let them beat me” or “they are going to be better than me.” They are no longer concerned that if they told them this or showed them that, then they would be replaced. You have to play your role, especially when it isn’t the star of the show. When a leader operates behind the scenes, they lead quietly and with humility. And that is the best leader of them all.
