A little not so secret to running a successful team or business unit is that what gets talked about gets improved. Why do so many managers forget to use this powerful weapon to improve their team? Managers need to be mindful of the frequency and duration they are giving to any particular thing. The frequency and duration of communication ultimately determine outcomes. For example:
Falling short on goals, talk about them more.
Having an issue with gossip, talk about it more.
If there is a negative perception about your team, talk more about the good things they are doing.
Bad behaviors running rampant, spend more time talking about the right behaviors.
Take control over your success by choosing to frequently talk longer about the things that matter most. Stop spending the most amount of your time on the things that aren’t going to enable your team to be successful. As a manager you set the frequency and duration given to any particular topic, choose wisely. Do this and you will improve morale, increase efficiency, and get more of the right work done.
If you have any other examples of areas that can be improved with longer and more frequent communication please provide them in the comments below.
