For many, with the New Year comes the ritual of setting resolutions. Understandably, the idea of a fresh start and the opportunities of the New Year are alluring. While the historical practice has both secular and non-secular origins; few would contest that the concept is based on the idea of launching the year with self improvement in mind, or helping others to achieve improved physical, spiritual, emotional or intellectual well-being. However If I may, I’d like to break it down a bit further with you.
A Resolution is a declaration, pledge or promise. But, to be Resolute is to be committed. If you look up Resolute in a Thesaurus you’ll find synonyms like firm, unyielding, determined, tenacious, and perhaps my favorite…purposeful.
Yet, as I listen to friends, family and co-workers proclaim their 2015 resolutions, I’ve noticed a tendency toward two approaches which don’t lend themselves to prolonged success. The First is the inclusion of the word “try”. The second is “I’ll figure it out as I go along.”
To ensure your long-term success with your resolution you must commit to it. Trying won’t take you there, but Doing will. With intent to change, you must have a plan; a plan which has a defined goal. With a defined goal, you’ll have a clear vision of the finish line and know when it is time to celebrate your achievements.
In business we speak of S.M.A.R.T. goals, which is a proven method to achieve. SMART is the acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound (a due date). Why not apply this approach to your professional and personal resolutions? Hold yourself accountable to realistic, but very specific behavioral changes which can be measured in quantity or frequency within a defined timeframe. Another way to help ensure your success is to write out your SMART goal and track your success in a fitting chart.
Take time to contemplate your resolution and choose something truly purposeful. Whatever your resolution or your approach to achieving it, be SMART and be RESOLUTE and most importantly celebrate your success!
Happy New Year!
