A successful leader needs to have a vision of a better tomorrow. They need to be able to articulate that vision and inspire others to come on the journey. What happens after the vision is set and they have inspired others to join them? Successful leadership doesn’t end there, it isn’t a set it and forget it kitchen appliance. You have the vision and the team; here are the 3 keys to unlocking your success as a leader.
- Output – not just the quantity of work produced but also the quality, relevance, and outcomes. Leaders must establish the standards of performance, ensure they are being met, and always find ways to improve at all times.
- Viability – the degree to which you are capable of growing and developing yourself and your team to meet the challenges of the role or task at hand (think: are they in the right role). Leaders have to make difficult decisions along the way by quickly recognizing when someone isn’t a fit and moving them around or out. Firing a top performer who is creating a toxic environment or sabotaging the vision. Realizing their leadership style has taken them as far as it can and appointing another leader to carry the torch the rest of the way.
- Development and growth – the degree to which you can develop and grow yourself and your team beyond the current role (think: continuous learning). Personal development must be practiced daily. There are so many resources out there that teach and inspire from reading a book to webinars to networking events to seminars. Limit your tunnel vision by building in time for personal development daily. The only way you can develop and grow others is if you are developing and growing yourself.
When any one of these three things is missing the leader and their team become stagnate and ultimately irrelevant. Your ability as a leader to demonstrate these things and to bring them out in others is what will ultimately determine your success and your legacy.
