These Feminine Traits Are Needed Now in Leadership

People all over the world are starving for better leadership. Demand for more inclusive leadership continues to gain momentum. Simultaneously, the “masculine” way of leadership is falling more and more out of style. Male leaders themselves aren’t the problem. It is those in leadership roles that continue to be task-focused rather than leveraging an interpersonal style. Leadership is failing in a way that is turning people off to masculine traits. However, it is important to note that labeling traits are more about popular perception than based in reality.

These traits are most often associated with the negative side of male leadership:

  • Arrogant
  • Ego-driven
  • Bravado
  • Dominant
  • Aggressive
  • Competitive
  • Stubborn
  • Self-righteous
  • Direct

Unfortunately, these traits don’t just apply to men, but women as well. Therefore, when I suggest that men need to leverage their feminine side of leadership, I also suggest that female leaders do. Perhaps women emulate these traits because they think they have to or their mentors have demonstrated these traits. The following characteristics are traditionally considered feminine; however, adopting them as part of your leadership style has many benefits.

Empathy

Leaders who practice empathy identify and understand another’s situation, feelings, and motives. Empathy is essential for a leader because it helps to build trust. Demonstrating empathy improves results, especially in a sales environment, product management, and a diverse workforce.

Inter-personal

These leaders place a strong focus on relationships. They encourage harmony within the group by inspiring them to pursue a common goal. The high value placed on relationships achieves better results because there is an emphasis on collaboration. Building strong relationship helps them make better decisions and increase buy-in from the team.

Vulnerability

Leaders demonstrating vulnerability has become more important with the spread of COVID-19. It is owning their limitations and showing the strength to ask for help. Vulnerable leaders are an authentic version of themself. Additionally, these leaders honestly share their doubts when faced with uncertainty. Most importantly, being vulnerable is the foundation for human connection, which is dramatically missing from workplaces. Leaders who express vulnerability inspire others to join them on the journey to realizing their vision.

Inclusive

Inclusive leaders actively listen to many voices. They are intentional in soliciting diverse thinking. They make sure everyone is heard, respected, and listened to. Inclusive leaders have an open mind when it comes to new approaches to problems. Because they are inclusive, they understand how different team members will react to change. As a result, they can easily influence them to get on board with new ideas or new ways of doing things.

Humility

Following along with vulnerability is humility. These leaders are less likely to react and blame others. They have a constant desire to learn. Humble leaders admit when they don’t know the answer and seek help. Humility in leadership is an indication they prioritize the organization’s success over their own. The traits of a humble leader result in less turnover and higher-performing teams.

Today’s work and workforce require a different kind of leader. Leadership has continued to evolve from autocratic and directive to participative and democratic to where we are today. For that reason, these feminine traits are needed now in leadership. While the above traits aren’t all-encompassing, they will help both men and women to strengthen the perception of their leadership style.
