We’ve stopped saying you’re welcome and without realizing it are minimizing the other person’s gratitude.
These are not ways to say you’re welcome:
- No problem
- Uh-huh
- Sure
- OK
- Anytime
- Or the dreaded right
What these words are saying is that what I did for you wasn’t the sacrifice you thought it was. It also indicates that you were not happy to do the act that you are being thanked for. In other words you are a grumpy, ungrateful, agitated person but aren’t bold enough to have your actions interpreted as rude so you opted to allow your words to be rude instead.
When people show you gratitude by saying “thank you” respond with “you’re welcome”. Replying to someone’s help using anything but “you’re welcome” is robbing them of their gratitude.
Take the time to say thank you, it is the proper way to reward the gratitude given to you. Saying thank you will also make you feel just a little bit better.
